{"id":4051,"date":"2024-10-29T05:37:52","date_gmt":"2024-10-29T11:37:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.ecodinghub.in\/teachpi\/story\/girl-on-a-memory-mission\/"},"modified":"2024-11-06T01:32:29","modified_gmt":"2024-11-06T08:32:29","slug":"girl-on-a-memory-mission","status":"publish","type":"story","link":"https:\/\/dev.ecodinghub.in\/teachpi\/story\/girl-on-a-memory-mission\/","title":{"rendered":"Girl on a Memory Mission"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1123\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.ecodinghub.in\/teachpi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Adriana-Writing.jpg\" alt=\"Adriana-Writing\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.ecodinghub.in\/teachpi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Adriana-Writing.jpg 341w, https:\/\/dev.ecodinghub.in\/teachpi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Adriana-Writing-199x300.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/>Adriana Martin (2007 &#8211; )<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00bb Youngest person to recite more than 600 digits&#8230; and counting!<\/p>\n<p>It all began when Adriana Martin\u2019s kindergarten teacher challenged her and her classmates to learn 20 digits of Pi.\u00a0 Just 20\u2026 which is quite a feat for a 5 or 6 year old, but not nearly enough to satisfy Adriana.<\/p>\n<p>She needed only two days to commit those 20 digits to memory, so she decided to go for 40, which her teacher said was the kindergarten record.\u00a0 Still not satisfied, Adriana told her parents she wanted to go for 100.\u00a0 This started approaching school-wide competitive territory, so she pressed on and learned 120 in time for Southfield School\u2019s overall pi recitation contest.\u00a0 Indeed, Adriana placed 4<sup>th<\/sup> in the whole K-8 school!<\/p>\n<p>But was that enough for Adriana?\u00a0 Not even close.\u00a0 The Shreveport, La. native was so proud of her showing in the school-wide contest that she became determined to win it outright the next year \u2013 in 1<sup>st<\/sup> grade, that is.\u00a0 The prior year\u2019s winner had recited about 250, and the all-time school record was 300.\u00a0 Instead of aiming for, say, 301, Adriana decided it would be most appropriate to\u2026 <em>double it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>She devoured the digits, 12 to 15 at a time, repeating each new string back to Mom or Dad until it was perfect, then adding it to the last 50 she had firmed up.\u00a0 And then once a week, she would start at the 3 and recite them all.<\/p>\n<p>On Pi Day 2014, Adriana sat down at school with a stack of paper, each containing about a hundred blank spaces for writing down the digits.\u00a0 To everyone\u2019s astonishment, she dutifully wrote down 600 of them\u2026 and 3 more for good measure.<\/p>\n<p>In 2015, using the same written approach, she reeled off an unbelievable 1,420 digits. (She actually made it up to 1,456, but she transposed digits 1,421 and 1,422&#8230; and the rules are the rules!)<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a02016, Adriana didn&#8217;t let up.\u00a0 In fact, she nearly doubled her previous total, reaching a stunning 2,812 digits.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a02017, she continued her dominance, racking up 3,715 digits without missing a beat.<\/p>\n<p>And in 2018, she kept up her blazing pace by reciting 5,087 digits as a 5th grader.<\/p>\n<p>When asked how she remembers all those numbers, Adriana simply says that she can see them in her head.\u00a0 Wouldn\u2019t it be nice if it were that easy for the rest of us?<\/p>\n<p>Adriana\u2019s potential for rewriting the pi memory record books is, you might say, infinite.\u00a0 She can blaze through the middle school <a title=\"Memorization Rankings by Grade\" href=\"http:\/\/teachpi.org\/people\/memorizers\/rankings-by-grade\/\">rankings<\/a>, but with each passing year, she&#8217;s starting to enter the lofty territory of the legendary\u00a0<a title=\"The Kid Memory Whiz\" href=\"http:\/\/teachpi.org\/stories\/the-kid-memory-whiz\/\">Gaurav Raja<\/a> (you\u2019ll have to <a title=\"The Kid Memory Whiz\" href=\"http:\/\/teachpi.org\/stories\/the-kid-memory-whiz\/\">read his story<\/a> to see how many he rattled off!).<\/p>\n<h5><strong>How far will Adriana go?\u00a0 The sky\u2019s the limit!\u00a0<\/strong> Please cheer her on from near and far, and keep an eye on the rankings as they\u2019re updated each spring to see just how high she climbs!<\/h5>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It all began when Adriana Martin\u2019s kindergarten teacher challenged her and her classmates to learn 20 digits of Pi.
